Drug Study Aldomet Methyldopa w/Nursing Responsibilities

Centrally acting antihypertensive, decreases sympathetic outflow
Liver Disease, bisulfate allergy
Discolors urine, initial transient sedation, edema, hemolytic anemia, hepatic disorders, fevers,
Tolerance may occur, Monitor hepatic function, especially in the first 6---12 wk of therapy or if unexplained fever appears. Discontinue drug if fever, abnormalities in liver function tests, or jaundice occur. Discontinue therapy if involuntary choreoathetotic movements occur.
Discontinue if edema progresses or signs of CHF occur.

Amlodipine





















Norvasc
Adult: 5 to 10 mg orally once a day
Inhibits calcium ion influx across cardiac and smooth muscle cells, decreasing myocardial contractility and oxygen demands
NORVASC is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to amlodipine.
Side effects of amlodipine are generally mild and reversible. The two most common side effects are headache and edema (swelling) of the lower extremities. Less common side effects include dizziness, flushing, fatigue, nausea, and palpitations
  Monitor BP for therapeutic effectiveness. BP reduction is greatest after peak levels of amlodipine are achieved 6–9 h following oral doses.
 Monitor for S&S of dose-related peripheral or facial edema
  Monitor BP with postural changes. Report postural hypotension. Monitor more frequently when additional antihypertensives or diuretics are added.

Pediatric patients less than 40kg. URIs, GU infection, skin and soft tissue infection 20-40 mg/ kg/ day PO in divided doses every 8hrs.









Bactericidal: inhibits synthesis of cell wall of sensitive organisms causing cell death.









-Infections due to susceptible strains of haemophilus influenzae, e.coli, proteus mirabilis, neisseria gonorrheae, steptococcus pneumoniae, enterococcus fecalis, streptococci, non-penicillinase- producing staphylococci









-Contraindicated with allergies to penicillin, cephalosporins, or other allergens.
-Use cautiously with renal disorders,and lactation.









-CNS: Lethargy, Hallucinations, Seizures
-GI: Glossitis, Stomatitis, Gastritis, sore mouth, furry tongue, black “hairy” tongue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, entercolitis, pseudomembranous, colitis,nonspecific hepatitis,

-Do not stop because you will feel better
-This antibiotic  is specific for this problem and should not be used to self-treat other infection

Augmentin
Adult: 250-500 mg PO q8h
B-lactam antibiotic w/ B-lactamase inhibitor Spectrum. Augmentin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls.
Augmentin is contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any penicillin. It is also contraindicated in patients with a previous history of Augmentin-associated cholestatic jaundice/ hepatic dysfunction
Abdominal discomfort, allergic reactions, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, nausea, hyperactivity, drowsiness. 
 Evaluate for infection, use barrier contraception, Monitor for S&S of a rash (usually occurring within a few days after start of drug) suggestive of a hypersensitivity reaction. If it occurs, look for other signs of hypersensitivity (fever, wheezing, generalized itching, dyspnea), and report to physician immediately.
Report onset of generalized, erythematous, maculopapular rash (ampicillin rash) to physician.
